Tues 18 Dec to Chaing Khong
Onto the rural countryside – lots of rice paddy fields, cows, water buffalo. We travel through the mountains by bus. Morning stop at a cashew factory. We now understand why cashews cost so much. They grow one to a pod the size of a red pepper. After much drying and baking one cashew is extracted by hand one at a time, shaved of its skin- one tree produces only 1 kg of nuts.
Second stop is at a gorgeous white temple glittering in the sun. It is very ornate but covered in skulls, bony hands, and murals of the paths to heaven and hell. Oil, money, and time were depicted as paths to evil.
