Feb 22 – 25 Last day in California and then home
Feb 21 – We stop in San Jose to visit the Winchester Mystery House. A strange house consisting of 160 rooms, 10,000 windows, 2,000 doors. Some of the doors lead to nowhere, open to walls, or even open out to an 8-foot drop. A staircase runs from the floor right to the ceiling. The story is that Sarah Winchester, heiress to part of the Winchester fortune, lost her husband and only child, went to consult a medium. She was told to appease the bad spirits of her misfortune that she needed to keep building. To appease the spirits of all those killed by the Winchester rifle, she did just that. She had rooms built on for 38 years, 24 hours a day. She decided the design and told the builders what to do so there was no overall plan leading to a mishmash of rooms in this huge estate. A fascinating place to visit.
After 9 months on the road and 42,500 km, it was time to head north back home.
