Drive to Chivay
Up early for our drive to Chivay which takes us thru the windy roads of the high mountains. The highest elevation we reach is 4910 meters at Patapampa.
We travel thru a vicuna reserve, vicuunas are similar to llamas but smaller. Every year the vicunas are rounded up to be shorn. Their wool is highly prized and sells for over 300us a Kilo
Three hours into our drive we stop for a special tea which we are told helps with altitude sickness. Their was also the usual natives trying to sell you something.
We continued to drive thru these windy roads for another 2 1/2 hours with short stops to take pictures of the summit, their one active volcano and wild chinchillas.
When we arrived in Chivay we had 30 minutes free time then a 3k walk to a natural hot spring for a well deserved soak.
At dinner this evening we were entertained with local music and dancing. Lots of fun.
Early night tonight up at 5:00am for our trip to Colca canyon.
